| 释义 | balding The adjective balding seems to have originated in Time magazine in 1938. It was the particular bugbear of Theodore Bernstein, who denounced it repeatedly as nonexistent and needless. Few other commentators seem to have been offended by it, and even two well-known usage panels have found it acceptable. The word seems to have filled a need, for it has become rapidly established in American English. Foster 1968 mentions a British critic who questioned its need in British English, but it seems to have established some sort of foothold there as well. The OED Supplement has a British citation that antedates the critic by five years.
