词组 | adverbial nouns |
释义 | adverbial nouns One of the charming and infuriating aspects of English is that English nouns may upon occasion function as adverbs. Some handbooks and other textbooks refer to these as adverbial nouns. A couple of examples: • Every night she runs four miles. (Clark et al. 1981) The tie cost a dollar. (Roberts 1954) Other grammarians would analyze the examples above as noun phrases (every night, four miles, a dollar) used as adverbs. Adverbial nouns are one member of the larger class of adverbials. See adverbial genitive for another kind of adverbial noun. |
