词组 repast
释义 repast
Various commentators describe repast as stiff, pretentious, obsolescent, or quaint. A look at the evidence shows it to be a somewhat literary word of fairly low frequency that has lately begun to acquire some currency, probably because of the recent increase in writing about food. It also has some literary use, in modern stories as well as older novels. Here are a few examples from our files:
... Madame Foucault, who had herself served Sophia with her invalid's repast —Arnold Bennett, The Old Wives'Tale, 1908
... a splendid repast, with silver, crystal, damask, 3 roast goose —Ursula K. LeGuin, "The Rule of Names," in Adventures for Readers (8th grade text), ed. Egbert W. Nieman et al., 1979
One of the most delectable meals I have sampled in a long while was a simple repast —Craig Claiborne, N. Y. Times Mag., 20 Apr. 1986
