词组 | resource |
释义 | resource Fowler 1926 cites several sentences in which resource is mistakenly used in place of recourse and resort in such phrases as have recourse to and in the last resort. A few later commentators (Partridge 1942, Evans 1957, Copperud 1970, 1980, and Phythian 1979) have repeated Fowler's warnings against such misuse, and one recent British dictionary (Longman 1984) continues to describe it as "a common confusion." Our evidence, however, does not agree. We do have a few citations, most of them from the 19th century, in which resource is used when either recourse or resort seems possible, and perhaps preferable to modern ears: • ... finally resolved that it could be the last resource, if her private inquiries ... were unfavourably answered —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, 1813 But we have no clear-cut examples of mistaken use other than the ones cited by Fowler. We do not doubt that some confusion may still occur, but our lack of evidence strongly suggests that it is not at all common in edited prose. Current writers appear to have little trouble keeping resource distinct from recourse and resort: • ... must now learn to function as a resource to her colleagues —Barbara Aiello, N.Y. Times, 25 Apr. 1976 • ... the idea of a library as a cultural resource persists —O. B. Hardison, Jr., Entering the Maze, 1981 • They dry well, too, I am told, without recourse to messy boxes of borax or gel —Eleanor Perenyi, Green Thoughts, 1983 • In the last resort, Hitler's sense of destiny was his doom —Terence Prittie, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 26 Sept. 1976 |
