词组 restaurateur, restauranteur
释义 restaurateur, restauranteur
The word restaurateur was borrowed into English from French at the end of the 18th century. Several decades later, according to written evidence, restaurant was similarly borrowed. In the years since, restaurant has become an extremely common English word, but restaurateur has remained uncommon—or, at least, far less common than restaurant. This difference in frequency of use has given rise to the variant form restauranteur, pronounced and spelled with an n. Our first written evidence of restauranteur is from the 1920s:
The individual restauranteur is helpless —New Yorker, 20 Feb. 1926
Why should a restauranteur hold fast to his ancient traditions ... ? —Harper's, September 1926
In current English, restauranteur is quite common in speech and fairly common in writing:
... fellow Houston restauranteurs —Tom Curtis, Inc. Mag., August 1982
... respected cooking teacher, cookbook author and restauranteur —Publishers Weekly, 17 Sept. 1982
Restaurateur is the usual written form, especially in writing that has passed under a copy editor's eye, but restauranteur is a standard secondary variant.
