词组 sans
释义 sans
This French preposition meaning "without" was borrowed into English in the 14th century and occurs fairly commonly today, but it has never entirely lost its Frenchness. It might have passed into disuse long ago were it not for the influence of Shakespeare, who used it in many of his plays, most memorably in As You Like It (1600):
Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
Modern writers still occasionally echo this famous passage:
I had forgotten ... that this was wartime; sans Salts, sans fish, sans nets, sans sails, sans everything — Gladys Bronwyn Stern, Trumpet Voluntary, 1944
But sans also frequently occurs when no allusion to Shakespeare is being made. In its most typical use, its object is a regular noun rather than a pronoun or gerund, and the a, an, or the which would normally occur after without is dropped:
Most rooms on Hotel Circle in Mission Valley, sans waterbed, go for just $12 —David Butwin, Saturday Rev., 10 July 1971
... was named as a special assistant to the Presidentelect, sans press title —David Wise, Esquire, May 1973
Negotiations ensued and the ad finally did run, sans marijuana leaf —Laurel Leff, Wall Street Jour., 4 June 1981
Because it still retains much of its foreign quality, sans often appears in italics. Even when it is in roman type, however, sans is an unusual word, one that calls attention to itself. It occurs much more commonly in writing than in speech, but if you do have occasion to say it, be advised that its usual pronunciation in English is \\\\'sanz\\\\
