词组 bestow
释义 bestow
Back in the 18th century the grammarian Lowth corrected a Swiftian bestow to to bestow upon; Lindley Murray corrected a bestow of to bestow upon. Lowth and Murray seem to have had an accurate feel for what idiomatic usage would be: in modern use upon and on are the usual prepositions.
Dolly bestowed upon him her highest compliment —Clarence Budington Kelland, Saturday Evening Post, 25 Dec. 1954
... the Queen is the fountain of honours and when she bestows a peerage upon a subject ... —Nancy Mitford, Noblesse Oblige, 1956
... bestowing half-abstracted nods of greeting from time to time on passing acquaintances —Thomas Wolfe, You Can't Go Home Again, 1940
... the instant hero status that the press bestowed on these first seven astronauts —C. D. B. Bryan, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 23 Sept. 1979
This example with at is probably influenced by glance:
But if you are to understand the new Oxford you must bestow a glance at the old —S. P. B. Mais, The English Scene To-day, 2d ed., 1949
When bestow means "to put in a place, stow," however, it often takes in:
Instead of bestowing the envelope safely in his pocket —Dorothy L. Sayers, Murder Must Advertise, 1933
... parcels which she bestowed in the corners of the vehicle —Arnold Bennett, The Old Wives' Tale, 1908
