词组 | envious, enviable |
释义 | envious, enviable At one time, envious and enviable shared a sense, "highly desirable," but this sense has just about faded from general usage. That is to say, envious has lost the sense while enviable has retained it. Some language commentators warn not to mix up the two words, but our files show that such confusion is unlikely, because envious is not now used in the shared sense except in such contexts as poetry: • Theirs was an envious gift, but lightly held — Thomas Cole, Interim, vol. 4, 1954 Envious, when used with a preposition, is usually used with of: • ... were envious of the easier way of life of their Ki-kuyu neighbours —L. S. B. Leakey, Mau Mau and theKikuyu, 1952 |
