词组 squeeze, squoze
释义 squeeze, squoze
When the President of the United States uses a dialectal past tense of a verb at a news conference, people notice. Ronald Reagan in August 1985 was commenting on a small skin cancer that had been removed from his nose. He had thought it a pimple:
I picked at it and I squoze it and so forth and messed myself up a little.
This use puzzled syndicated columnist James J. Kilpa-trick, who wrote that he had never encountered it before. He might have found it in Harper 1975, 1985, where it is called substandard.
Squoze is apparently the most common of a number of dialectal variants of the past tense of squeeze. It is attested in both British and American dialect: the OED Supplement shows it in American English since 1844. Our most recent evidence apart from President Reagan happens to associate it with orange-growing areas, but older evidence shows squoze to be more widespread.
The form used in writing is consistently squeezed. Squoze, so far, is oral and dialectal. Both squoze and squozen are sparsely attested as dialectal past participles.
