| 释义 | nouns as verbs It occasionally comes as a surprise to the linguistically unsophisticated that nouns can be put to work as verbs. This, like the use of nouns as adjectives, is a practice with a long history. Dean Alford 1866 commented on the subject; among the verbified nouns he mentions are progress, head, and experience. The Dean was not upset by the practice, but several recent commentators—Freeman 1983, Harper 1975, 1985, and Strunk & White 1972, 1979 among them—have criticized specific instances of the practice. The verbified nouns (or déverbal nouns, to use a term many linguists use) that are objected to include chair, host, gift, and debut, all of which are treated separately in this book. The opposite practice, that of turning verbs into nouns, also occurs. There is commentary on the subject in Safire 1980 and 1984. |
