词组 Grecian, Greek
释义 Grecian, Greek
The distinction between these adjectives has been variously described by commentators dating back to Fowler 1926. What our evidence shows is that the distinction is not observed as consistently as some of the commentators would like. Both adjectives are used in referring to both ancient and modern Greece, although Greek is certainly the more common and more widely applied of the two. Some commentators have wanted to restrict Grecian to the architecture and art of ancient Greece and to human features suggestive of that art ("a Grecian nose"), but the evidence simply does not support such a narrow restriction:
... essential for full Grecian participation in the war —Atlantic, June 1944
A Grecian pruning saw ... is perfect for this —Mil-licent Taylor, Christian Science Monitor, 26 Dec. 1975
... German tourists are beginning to people Grecian beaches —Frank Riley, Saturday Rev., 30 Oct. 1976
Such usage may now deserve to be called atypical, but it is not actually incorrect. Grecian and Greek are basically synonymous words. We recommend that you rely on your own sense of idiom to choose between them in a given context.
