词组 han't
释义 han't
Han't, sometimes spelled ha'n't, is one of those efficient negative contractions that came into fashionable use during the 17th century in England. It was the contraction for both have not and has not. It was common in the Restoration comedies of Wycherly, Congreve, Vanbrugh, and Farquhar, and was used by Jonathan Swift in his Journal to Stella. Some examples:
Han't I always been thy friend ... ? —William Wycherly, The Country Wife, 1675
Pray heaven that old rogue Coupler han't sent us to fetch milk out of the gunroom! —Sir John Vanbrugh, The Relapse, 1696
I han't seen Lord Pembroke yet —Jonathan Swift, Journal to Stella, 21 Oct. 1711
In 1815 an American named David Humphrey, one of the "Hartford Wits," published a play titled The Yan-key in England. The play was apparently intended for an English audience, for at the back of the volume Humphrey included a glossary of Americanisms used by the Yankey, Doolittle, in the play. Among those listed was han't, listed alongside havn't, for have not. The inclusion of han't suggests that it did have some American use as well. Later in the 19th century the usual spelling was hain't (which see). It has been replaced by haven't and hasn't.
