词组 | with |
释义 | with With used to join two nouns (as what Quirk et al. 1985 calls a quasi-coordinator) has attracted some attention among usage commentators. A few maintain that a singular noun coordinated with another singular noun by with should take a singular verb; others, quoting authoritative works on syntax, believe either a singular or plural verb may be used, depending on notional agreement. Surveyed opinion (Leonard 1932, Crisp 1971) holds the use of a plural verb to be disputable. Here is one example of such use: • Pichon was, indeed, glowering. He with Roosevelt were the representatives of republics —Mark Sullivan, Our Times, vol. 4, 1932 For more on this topic, see agreement, subject-verb: compound subjects 3. |
