词组 | win |
释义 | win The use of win as a noun synonymous with victory was first recorded in 1862. Like victory, it occurs commonly in contexts having to do with sports and politics: • ... paced the freshman team to ten wins out of fourteen games —Current Biography, July 1965 • ... has improved his record by a win a season since 1967 —Sports Illustrated, 21 Sept. 1970 • ... can't afford anything but a thumping win ... in that primary —Hunter S. Thompson, Rolling Stone, 3 Feb. 1972 • ... an outright Communist win cannot be entirely discounted —The Economist, 4 Apr. 1953 • Political consultants, he says, do not have the high percentage of wins that they claim —Robert Sherrill, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 27 Dec. 1981 This use of win has been viewed with disfavor by only a few critics. Bernstein 1965 calls it a "needless casual-ism" and would limit it to the sports pages, where presumably it is all right to be casual. Bernstein's opinion is not shared by many, however, and it is not reflected by actual usage. |
