词组 | theirselves |
释义 | theirselves Theirselves is, like hisself, a logically formed pronoun of impressive age that now occurs only in substandard speech and representations thereof. In form it is analogous to myself, yourself, herself, and ourselves, but logic and analogy are as nothing compared to usage, and usage decrees that the word favored in standard English is themselves. In centuries past, theirselves did appear from time to time in reputable writing: • They aver that they theirselves have been no less scandalized than I myself —J. Morgan, A Complete History of Algiers, 1728 (OED) But the only writing it now shows up in is imitative of rustic speech: • They was talking and bawling amongst theirselves, but... the ones I heard was more scairt than hurt — William Wister Haines, High Tension, 1938 See also hisself. |
