词组 themself
释义 themself
According to the OED, themself was the normal form of the third person plural reflexive pronoun until about 1540, when it was superseded by them-selfs and, ultimately, themselves. The OED says that themself "disappeared'''' by about 1570, but we do have a little recent evidence of its use:
... they think that they're seeing probably pieces of themself —actor speaking on the "Today" television program, 9 Feb. 1983
This may be nothing more than an awkward slip of the tongue, but one recent use seems to have been intentional. A restaurant chain several years ago encouraged its customers to appraise the service they had been given by filling out a card on which several questions were asked, including "Did the server introduce themself by name?" Themself seems to have been deliberately chosen as a gender-neutral singular reflexive pronoun, taking the place of himself or herself. This use of themself is similar to the use of they, their, and them in reference to singular terms (see they, their, them). Such use of they, their, and them is old and well established, but this use is not.
