词组 | entitle |
释义 | entitle Entitle has two common meanings: "to give a title to, title" and "to give a right to." Sources as diverse as Emily Post 1927 and Bremner 1980 have expressed disapproval of using entitled to mean "titled." However, this well-established usage has been common for over 500 years and is the older of the two senses. • ... a sermon entitled "Popular Government by Divine Right" —Stuart W. Chapman, Yale Rev., Summer 1954 • ... describes himself as an "elephant tramp" for the purpose of entitling his autobiography —Robert Lewis Taylor, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 27 Feb. 1955 • ... shows entitled "Sesame Street" —Annual Report, Carnegie Corp., 1969 • ... a chapter entitled Eugene Onegin —Times Literary Supp., 30 July 1971 • I was impelled to entitle a recent political column about the Saudi oil minister, Sheik Ahmed Yamani, "Yamani or Ya Life" —Safire 1984 The sense "to give a right to" has inspired commentary rather than criticism. Evans 1957 notes that it "is not followed by the -ing form of a verb, as in this entitles you to going," and Fowler 1926 says that "it does not mean bound (to do) or liable (to a penalty)." We agree with both of these statements because none of the citations we have fits either of the patterns described. Entitle is almost always used with to plus an infinitive or a noun phrase, and in all cases the thing that is entitled to be had or done is something that is desired or desirable. • ... felt entitled to advise her in such matters —Louis Auchincloss, A Law for the Lion, 1953 • We were entitled to believe ... that there was a general acceptance of the principles —John Foster Dulles, U.S. News& World Report, 16 July 1954 • When children are cheated of these happy times to which they are entitled —Frances R. Horwich, NEA Jour., February 1965 • ... we're entitled to our half of the country —Ian Douglas Smith, quoted in Time, 26 Nov. 1965 • This rank entitles us to full membership —Naomi F. Levin, Barnard Alumnae, Winter 1971 |
