词组 incentivize
释义 incentivize
This is perhaps the most recent of the infamous verbs that end in -ize. Its meaning is "to give incentives to," as in "ways for companies to incentivize their employees." We first heard of it in 1970 from a correspondent who told us that it was in common use by people in the advertising business. In published writing, however, it was anything but common, and we didn't encounter it again until an instance of its use in the Wall Street Journal was cited in Harper 1985. The Harper panelists rejected it almost unanimously with varying degrees of disgust and horror. Our continued lack of evidence for it suggests that those who despise it have little to fear. For the time being, anyway, incentiv-ize shows no sign of working its way into the mainstream of English.
