词组 unhuman, inhuman
释义 unhuman, inhuman
Inhuman is the older of these two words and by far the more common. Both were originally used to mean "lacking pity, kindness, or mercy"—inhuman in the 15th century and unhuman in the middle of the 16th. That sense of inhuman is still in frequent use, but since the late 1800s unhuman has primarily served simply as the negative of human:
... the bodies looked as limp and unhuman as bags of grain —Norman Mailer, The Naked and the Dead, 1948
Inhuman is also used to mean "not human" with no implication of moral judgment. It is, in fact, more common in this sense than unhuman:
... saw a strangeness in the daylight, and loved inhuman nature —John Updike, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 14 Nov. 1976
The Black Knight's voice was purposely made inhuman —John D. Tierney, Science 81, March 1981
... a timeless and abiding (and inhuman) reality reasserts itself in the surrounding wilderness —Joyce Carol Oates, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 13 Feb. 1983
