词组 field
释义 field
It is a bit of a convention in the field of college handbooks to disparage the phrase in the field of as deadwood, which it certainly is in such examples as "He is majoring in the field of physics." The complaint is probably more of a warning to freshman English students and other college writers than a generalization on usage at large.
In our files we have a handful of citations from which the phrase could have been harmlessly omitted. But our citations seldom have it attached to well-known areas of intellectual endeavor such as psychology, history, or medicine. More often it is used to flag some other noun as standing for a field of study or endeavor when that meaning might not otherwise be the first to come to mind:
Until Lévi-Strauss entered the field of mythology — John Bamberger, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 3 June 1973
... a writer of the utmost distinction in the crime field —Julian Symons, N Y. Times Book Rev., 30 Sept. 1979
... the company applied its expertise and credit resources to the field of finance leasing —Annual Report, General American Transportation Corp., 1970
... casting my memory back over the field of musicals —Hollis Alpert, Saturday Rev., 13 Nov. 1971
... to dominate the radio news field —Current Biography, October 1966
The phrase the field of is probably generally omissible before the name of a well-known field such as chemistry or mathematics or philosophy, but it may be useful in preventing misunderstanding if the field is passenger cars or mystery novels.
