词组 | February |
释义 | February A succession of \\\\r\\\\'s in different syllables of the same word presents an articulatory hurdle to many speakers, not only in English but in other languages. One solution is for one of the \\\\r\\\\'s to dissimi-late, either becoming a different sound, or dropping out altogether. Several words that come to us from Romance show the first process, with \\\\l\\\\ substituted for \\\\r\\\\: compare pilgrim with the etymologically related peregrine. Within English, in a number of words with unstressed \\\\ar\\\\ before a consonant, the \\\\r\\\\ drops from this position in favor of another \\\\r\\\\ more prominently placed. Thus caterpillar is often pronounced \\\\kat-ə-,pil-ər\\\\, and the first \\\\r\\\\ of elderberry, governor, offertory, surprise, thermometer, and vernacular and the second \\\\r\\\\ of paraphernalia are often dropped without exciting any notice or comment. February, by contrast, is a shibboleth. The most widespread pronunciation of this word among educated speakers is \\\\feb-yə-,wer-ē\\\\, and while the consensus of usage writers is tolerant of this version, most of us can recall having been admonished to say \\\\'feb-ru-,wer-ē\\\\ at some point in our school days. The status of other words in which \\\\r\\\\ is sometimes dropped from the end of a consonant cluster (as in February) varies. Library is perhaps pronounced \\\\'lī-,ber-ē\\\\ more often by children than by adults, and that pronunciation draws general disapproval. But synchrotron and temperature often come out \\\\'sin-kə-,trän\\\\ and \\\\tem-pə-chər\\\\ without causing eyebrows to be raised. |
