词组 | nonstandard |
释义 | nonstandard Nonstandard is a label frequently used in dictionaries and handbooks. It generally designates forms and constructions that are not characteristic of educated native speakers; these are very often regional-isms. Some books, such as Webster's Third, differentiate between nonstandard and substandard, using substandard as an indicator of social status. But many other books simply use nonstandard as a blanket replacement for substandard, illiterate, and various other now dated pejoratives. When it is applied indiscriminately like this, the label nonstandard should be regarded with a certain amount of healthy skepticism. See also standard, standard English; substandard. |
