词组 | job action |
释义 | job action This term denotes any of various tactics— usually short of a strike—by which disgruntled workers express their disgruntlement. Most commonly it applies to forms of protest undertaken by workers who are legally barred from striking: • Spokesmen for police and firemen's benevolent organizations said yesterday a loss of jobs ... could cause massive sick calls, mass rallies, demonstrations and other job actions —Boston Sunday Advertiser, 6 Feb. 1972 Our earliest record of its use is from 1968. Most dictionaries now recognize it as a standard term, but not everyone likes job action—most notably, the usage panel of Harper 1975, 1985 rejects it by almost a 2 to 1 margin. Some of its detractors cite it as a euphemism, but much of the criticism may derive more from disapproval of the actions themselves than from disapproval of the term that denotes them. |
