词组 | quick, quickly |
释义 | quick, quickly Use of quick as an adverb dates back to about 1300. It has a highly respectable pedigree, having occurred in the works of such authors as Shakespeare and Milton: • The latter quick up flew, and kickt the beam —Paradise Lost, 1667 (OED) This adverb is still correct and is commonly used, but it is now more likely to be encountered in speech ("Come quick!") than in writing, except when the writing is deliberately informal or includes dialogue: • "... You two learn so quick...." —Sinclair Lewis, Babbitt, 1922 • He shook his head. "You could take her a cup of coffee pretty quick " —Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Track Of The Cat, 1949 • I ditched that quick enough, but one thought struck me about that dumb high school I go to —Paul Zin-del, Scholastic Voice, 13 Apr. 1970 • With this guy I decided to end it quick —R. C. Pad-den, Harper's, February 1971 • ... I suppose the old lady was astounded at how quick I could get away on crutches —Flannery O'Connor, letter, 10 Nov. 1955 Its occurrence in less casual prose is relatively uncommon: • What they carried was needed, tragically quick, at the blast furnaces —Stewart Holbrook, N. Y. Herald Tribune Book Rev., 12 Jan. 1947 • This lovely menace spreads unbelievably quick — Alan L. Otten, Wallstreet Jour., 19 June 1956 • ... he will probably die quicker —David Dempsey, N.Y. Times Mag., 23 June 1974 The usual choice in such contexts—and the one recommended by usage commentators—is quickly: • A brilliant student, he moved quickly through his studies —Current Biography, March 1967 • ... he'd rise and walk quickly to Floral Hall — Edward Hoagland, Harper's, October 1970 Note that quick is also distinguished from quickly in that it almost always follows rather than precedes the verb it modifies ("They came quick," not "They quick came"; but "They came quickly" or "They quickly came").
