| 释义 | viewpoint A few critical brickbats have been directed at viewpoint since it was coined in the mid-19th century, but it has never been subjected to a full-scale assault. Most modern commentators who take note of this word regard it as a useful alternative to point of view. Simon 1980 is almost alone when he says "centuries of sound tradition have hallowed point of view as preferable to the Teutonism viewpoint." The evidence does not support him. The OED does include a single 18th-century citation for point of view (a gloss from Chambers' Cyclopaedia, 1727-41), but the first evidence showing its actual use in running text is from the early 19th century (in Coleridge's periodical The Friend, 1809-10), not all that long before viewpoint was first used ( 1856). It appears to us that viewpoint and point of view are about equally hallowed.
