词组 view with alarm
释义 view with alarm
View with alarm is sometimes called a cliché that is a typical bit of political bombast, but the most conspicuous thing about the phrase may be its elusiveness. William Safire mentions it in Safire's Political Dictionary (1978) but has no examples of its use, and H. L. Mencken {The American Language, Supplement I, 1945) notes that it is missing from the Dictionary of American English and the Dictionary of Americanisms.
Our first evidence of the phrase is from 1926. Our later evidence shows that it can be used straightforwardly and unbombastically:
Liebling views with alarm the trend toward fewer newspapers—Time, 10 Nov. 1947
Mr. Krutch is not alone in viewing with alarm the growing use of scientific techniques in the study of man —Ernest Nagel, New Republic, 28 June 1954
But its present status as a cliché may be discouraging writers from using view with alarm; we have very little current evidence for it.
