词组 | waive, wave |
释义 | waive, wave The usual meaning of waive is "to relinquish" or "to refrain from enforcing," as in "to waive a right" or "to waive a rule." It is also sometimes used in a sense synonymous with wave: • ... concrete troubles and evils remain. They are not magically waived out of existence —John Dewey, Reconstruction in Philosophy, 1920 • He would waive the whole business aside —Oliver St. John Gogarty, It Isn't This Time of Year at All!, 1954 • ... said "no," And waived them off—Edgar Lee Masters, "Finding of the Body," Domesday Book, 1920 This sense of waive was first attested in 1832. It undoubtedly arose from confusion with wave, and it is widely regarded as an error. The prudent thing to do is to use wave instead. |
