词组 bus
释义 bus
A few years ago there was a minor fuss over the verb bus—it was rejected by a narrow margin by the Heritage 1969 usage panel. The rejection may have been as much political as linguistic, since there was considerable controversy at the time about transporting children to school by bus to achieve racial balance. The panel of Heritage 1982 recanted; the verb was all right all along, of course. Note that both -s- and -ss- are in use in spelling the inflected forms:
... the guests, who were bused in — Women's Wear Daily, 21 July 1975
... and visitors and hostesses alike were bussed to the day-camp site —Judy Van Vliet Cook, Girl Scout Leader, March 1968
... the painless crusade against busing —Harper's, January 1973
... necessitating bussing of approximately 50 percent of the students —Ron Hollander, Town & Country, October 1979
Many people prefer the double -s spellings because they better indicate the pronunciation. The same concern for pronunciation makes some prefer the plural busses over buses for the noun in spite of the fact some handbooks prescribe the simple -s form. Both spellings are, in fact, in reputable use.
      ... on double-decker buses —Ray Walters, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 9 Sept. 1979
... people walked into the busses —Alfred Kazin, Prose, Spring 1973
