词组 | yours |
释义 | yours It is true that the -s in yours is a genitive ending, and it is true that the genitive -s is normally preceded by an apostrophe, but it is not true that there is an apostrophe in yours. Do not be too hard on yourself if you mistakenly include one, however. It could happen to almost anyone: • ... if you will do your's by repeating the French Grammar —Jane Austen, letter, 12 Nov. 1800 • Believe me, Mr. Terry, your's Truly —Lord Byron, letter, 12 Nov. 1805 • Your's of the 28th. ult. came to hand by our last post —Thomas Jefferson, letter, 9 May 1809 Actually, your's was standard in the 18th century, and it was an acceptable variant in the early 19th century, although it was appreciably less common than yours. In the late 20th century, however, yours is the only acceptable form. See also hers. |
