词组 | candelabra |
释义 | candelabra Originally the plural of candelabrum, candelabra has been used as a singular with the plural candelabras since at least 1815: • Four silver candelabras, holding great waxen torches —Sir Walter Scott, Ivanhoe, 1819 (OED) • Surrounded by gauzy nymphs and staglike men with candelabras, Zorina appeared barefoot —Arlene Croce, New Yorker, 12 July 1982 Even though Fowler 1926 disliked the usage, it is so well established (unlike, for instance, the singular use of criteria) that it goes almost entirely unnoticed. Candelabra is also still used as a plural of candelabrum: • There were white peacocks (stuffed) on the lawn, a tent hung with chandeliers and decorated with candelabra —Jody Jacobs, Los Angeles Times, 23 Sept. 1984 For other foreign plurals, see Latin plurals. |
