词组 | expediate |
释义 | expediate Expediate is a rare version of expedite that has been turning up at intervals since the 17th century. The OED lists it as a "spurious word," because, as far as the editors knew, it was created by error and thenceforth appeared only in dictionaries. It is originally attested in a 1605 book, in which it was changed to expedite by 1629. It was picked up in Henry Cockeram's 1623 dictionary of hard words (Cockeram includes expedite, too, but only as an adjective). From Cockeram it somehow found its way into Todd's edition (1818) of Johnson's Dictionary. But it has also been in editions of the Merriam-Webster unabridged since 1909 because it has continued in sporadic use over the last hundred years or so. We have no idea why expediate continues to pop up. One of our etymologists has theorized that it may be a spontaneous coinage in each instance, the product of the common verb ending -ate operating on expedient or expedite. It is unlikely to be a mere misspelling or typographical error, and our most recent example is reported from speech. Expedited would not be mistaken as expe-diated when spoken. • Clay said the board is seeking "expediated bargaining" in this year's teacher negotiations—by limiting talks to four or five issues —Jeri Kornegay, Jackson (Mich.) Citizen Patriot, 20 Jan. 1985 It is also possible that expediate is a spoken form that seldom finds its way into print and thereby eludes the notice of lexicographers, who would be glad to hear of documented occurrences, we are sure. For now it must be said that wary writers use expedite but very few use expediate. |
