词组 | approximately |
释义 | approximately The view of approximately originating in Flesch 1964 and Follett 1966, reported in Copperud 1970 and seconded by Nickles 1974, is that this adverb should be replaced by about or nearly or almost when it can be. These opinions appear to have been issued with little regard for how the word is actually used. It is in frequent use but is found most often in such contexts as corporate annual reports, technical works, and reference works. Our evidence shows it also appears in general prose of a serious cast but almost never in casual or informal contexts, where such substitutions as those suggested would be particularly suitable. Its most common single application in our files is to numerical quantities. Some examples of typical use: • Humble's share of... reserves of crude oil and natural gas liquids currently is estimated to be approximately 2 billion barrels —Annual Report, Standard Oil Co. (New Jersey), 1970 • ... a rational number which is approximately equal to the given irrational number —Edwina Deans et al., Extending Mathematics, 2d ed., 1968 • ... along a corridor approximately 200 miles long — Times Literary Supp., 14 Nov. 1968 A few examples without numbers: • ... a quadrangle running approximately east and west —Johns Hopkins Mag., April 1966 • "... have approximately the same feeling for it that the Black Panthers have for the Urban League — John Corry, Harper's, October 1970 "... pills which never had a taste but whose brand names are approximately remembered —Anthony Burgess, N.Y. Times Mag., 4 Dec. 1977 These uses are typical, and to judge from them there seems to be no very strong reason to avoid approximately. |
