词组 approximation
释义 approximation
Follett 1966 says that approximate (presumably the verb) takes no preposition (see approximate, where its use with to is illustrated) and that approximation takes to. This latter statement is partly true, but will not fully bear comparison with actual usage.
In mathematics we find approximation used with to, of, and for:
... successively better approximations to L — School Mathematics Study Group, Calculus, Part I, 1965
To get a better approximation of the mathematical idea of a point —School Mathematics Study Group, Geometry, Part I, 1965
... rational approximations for irrational numbers —Chuan C. Feng et al., A Course in Algebra and Trigonometry with Computer Programming, 1969
In other contexts we find both to and of with more recent nontechnical writing favoring of:
... the second approximation to the vertical pressure gradient —E. V. Laitone, Bulletin of the American Physical Society, 2 Sept. 1965
... a first approximation to the data which would be thus obtained —James B. Conant, Slums and Suburbs, 1961
... an extremely simple mechanism requiring only an approximation to accuracy —Roger Burlingame, Backgrounds of Power, 1949
... a close approximation of reality —Ralph Linton, The Cultural Background of Personality, 1945
... a terrifyingly close approximation of her own situation —Richard Poirier, A World Elsewhere, 1966
... in which the common language will be English, or some approximation of it —Herbert A. Simon, Think, May-June 1967
... the early accounts and estimates ... are often cruelly inadequate approximations of the historic truth —Max Lerner, Saturday Rev., 29 May 1976
... every effort should be made to achieve the closest approximation of it that is possible —Robert M. Hutchins, Center Mag., January 1968
