词组 | marshal, marshall |
释义 | marshal, marshall The usual spelling of both the noun and verb is marshal, but a look in the OED shows that marshall has seen occasional use as a variant for centuries. We have a fair amount of recent evidence of its occurrence in edited prose: • ... reminds me of the two frontier town marshalls —Frederick Fox, letter, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 21 Nov. 1965 • The fire marshall conducting the investigation — New York, 30 Aug. 1971 • ... she attempted to marshall and refine her feelings —Albert H. Johnston, Publishers Weekly, 4 Aug. 1975 • ... plants can marshall a complex array of chemical countermeasures —J. A. Miller, Science News, 25 May 1985 Nevertheless, marshall is regarded as a spelling error by several commentators. It seems to be a bit more likely in British English, where marshalled and marshalling are common for the inflected forms of the verb. In American English, especially, marshal is the better choice. |
