词组 chide
释义 chide
When used with a preposition, chide is usually used with for to designate what has provoked the chiding:
... his wife ... was forever chiding him for his grammatical lapses —William Styron, Lie Down in Darkness, 1951
Always the schoolmarm when it came to words, my mother chided him for ignorance —Russell Baker, Growing Up, 1982
There is evidence, though, for the use of chide with several other prepositions—with, on, as, and about:
... is chided with the fact that he, while declaring himself inimical to everything the Festival represents, still uses it —Irwin Shaw, Harper's, September 1970
... chided the administration on farm... policies — Wall Street Jour., 2 Sept. 1954
... chided advertisers and their agencies as being "the arch-conservatives of the contemporary world" —Tom Donlon, Advertising Age, 6 Apr. 1970
The last fellow who chided me about Southern ancestry was a Westerner —James Street, Holiday, October 1954
The past tense and past participle of chide have yet to settle in form. Although, as you can see from the last three illustrations, chided is usual in active constructions in American English, our evidence indicates that chid is more often used in British English:
I chid her for this unnecessary demonstration — Augustus John, Chiaroscuro, 1952
... chid them for drinking —Elizabeth Taylor, A Game of Hide-and-Seek, 1951
When the passive voice is used, the choice of past participle is not so clear-cut: chidden is found in both American and British writing, while chided seems to occur mainly in American English:
... [she] is chidden for continuing to write novels in her original mode —Frances Taliaferro, Harper's, February 1983
... like children who have been chidden —William Faulkner, Spotted Horses, 1940
... the disturbers glanced round ... as though chidden by an intruder in their own home —Vita Sack-ville-West, The Edwardians, 1930
... the Cardinal was chided for his words —Gay Talese, Harper's, January 1969
Less frequent is the form chid:
"Ah, no!" she sighs, and is chid —George Meredith, The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, 1859
