词组 | effectuate |
释义 | effectuate Effectuate is not a new verb (it was first recorded in 1580), but it has something of the quality of an awkward neologism, and its use has been subject to occasional criticism since the 19th century. It is not a word that occurs naturally in casual conversation; you aren't likely to hear anyone say "That was the hardest thing I ever effectuated" or "We finally effectuated a settlement of our argument." Most often it occurs in prose having a formal or legalistic quality, and it describes actions taken on an official or governmental level: • ... it would help effectuate the purposes of the law —American Labor, July 1968 • ... choose new social values and effectuate the changes conducive to progress —Neil H. Jacoby, "The Progress of Peoples," 1969 • ... the principle that the majority ... ought to be able to effectuate its desires —Thurgood Marshall, Center Mag., September 1969 • ... emphasizing the importance of institutions in effectuating good works —Aaron Wildavsky, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 9 Dec 1984 |
