词组 date
释义 date
 1. College handbooks used to carry warnings against the use of date in the sense of a social engagement usually with a person of the opposite sex, or in the sense of a person with whom one has such an engagement. Jensen 1935, for instance, warned against it, and Macmillan 1982 suggests that it wouldn't be appropriate for an appointment with the dean. Most recent books seem to have dropped the subject; Bryant 1962 called it standard. Janis 1984 thinks it a bit informal and warns that it is not used of a person with whom one has a business appointment.
Then I went on to my dinner date with friends — Ruth Mooney, Harpers, April 1972
She cares little for dates or school social affairs — Current Biography, October 1966
Stradlater was in the back, with his date —J. D. Salinger, Catcher in the Rye, 1951 (OED Supplement)
The appointment sense goes back to the 1880s and the person sense to the 1920s. This is a dead issue.
 2. Leonard's 1932 survey of usage found that the verb date, meaning roughly "to show signs of age, become outmoded" was considered in dispute. Crisp's 1971 survey showed that there was still residual resistance. What notion this resistance is based on, we do not know, for the usage is entirely standard. It is fairly common in general and literary contexts, and dates back before the turn of the century.

 3. When the verb date is used to point to a date of origin, it may be used with from, back to, or to.
