| 释义 | dais This odd-looking word for a raised platform has suffered a lot of phonological knocking about in the course of its descent from Latin discus (it is also related to our word dish), and the pronunciation has reflected some uncertainty. For a time the recommended pronunciation was \\\\'dās\\\\, rhyming with lace, but scarcely anyone says this. The most usual pronunciation now is \\\\'dā-əs\\\\, rhyming with pay us, and while this version was once denounced as "pedantic," it now is generally recommended. The second most common pronunciation is \\\\'dī-əs\\\\, as though the word were spelled (as it is, in fact, sometimes misspelled) dias. See also podium. |
