词组 | quoth |
释义 | quoth Quoth is the past tense of an obsolete verb quethen. It is used in the first and third persons and is regularly followed by its subject. It is archaic as a regular verb form and is used nowadays in special contexts, such as when a writer of historical fiction tries to recreate the speech and atmosphere of an earlier time. It is also sometimes used in modern contexts for humorous or arch effect or simply to catch attention: • "That's all right, Dad," quoth he —Martin Mayer, Esquire, May 1974 • Then the mayor labored mightily and brought forth an "austerity" budget. Not good enough, quoth the bankers —Sidney Cohen, Harper's Weekly, 4 July 1975 |
