【答】 脱离上下文，may not 是个歧义结构。I may not go.可以理解为：I am not allowed to go.

(不允许我走。)，也可以理解为：I probably will not go.(我也许不走或我可能不走。)但是maynot在任何情况下都不作“不可能”解。cannot 才作“不可能”解。例如：

1. He may not be serious.(=It is possible that he is not serious.)(GCE)

他可能不是认真的。

2. He can’t be serious.(=It is not possible that he is serious.)(GCE)

他不可能是认真的。

上面提到的英文句子似可译为：

缺少设备可能不是严重的问题(不利因素)，因为育种方面的许多重大成就，包括孟德尔的研究成果，都是在田野里取得的。

应当指出，在具体的句子里，may not常常是没有歧义的：
