【答】 据B.Foster考证，the turn of the century这个比较现代的短语在本世纪五十年代才开始在英国通用。但当时人们对这个颇为流行的短语的理解是不同的。有些作者用它来指“本世纪中期”;有些作者则用它来指“世纪末”，例如：

1. Music had a golden age in the days of Mozart and Beethoven at the turn of the eighteenthcentury.

在十八世纪末，在莫扎特和贝多芬生活时期，音乐有过它的黄金时代。

2. It starts at the turn of the century——about 1890.

它始于该世纪末——1890年前后。

经过一个时期的误用之后，大约到了1960年这个短语的词义便固定下来，已成为尽人皆知的了：the turn of the century=the beginning of the century(本世纪初)。因此，在上面两例中，应译作“20世纪初”或“本世纪初”。
