我认为译者把上句中的given a planet译为“已知行星”，是弄错了语法关系。不知您有何看法?

【答】 上面句中的given在语法上不是a planet的定语，而是引出一个短语作状语。其词义也不是“已知的”，而是“如果”、“如果有……”。正象R.Quirk等所指出的，Given the chance，I’d do it again=If I were given the chance…其实，given的这种用法是常见的，在一般辞书上都能查到：

1. Given good health，I hope to finish the work this year. (ALD)

假如健康状况良好，我希望今年完成这件工作。

2. (If) given the same treatment again，he is sure to get well. (LDCE)

假如再得到一次同样的治疗，他一定会痊愈的。

3. I’d come and see you in Austria，(if) given the chance. (LDCE)

若有机会我会到奥地利去看你的。
