■ initiative

1) 原先最基本的意义，是“主动”。如果第一次出现时就有定冠词 the，意思就是双方博弈或斗争中的“主动权”。

• It was evident that he had recovered the initiative.他显然夺回了主动权。
• They lost the initiative.他们丧失了主动权。

2) 作为表示性质的抽象名词（不可数），在笼统意义上使用时不加任何冠词，表示“首创精神”、“主动性”。

• She's got initiative.她很有首创精神。
• If you act responsibly and show that you have initiative, you will sooner or later be promoted.你如果工作负责，显示有首创精神，你就早晚会得到提拔的。
• You'll have to use your initiative.你需要发挥自己的独创性。

3) 加上所有者的限定词，表示某事是某人自己独立发动或主动去做的，不是被他人所推动的。

• They're acting on their own initiative.他们是自己主动这样干的。
• He went to see the headmaster on his own initiative.他主动去见校长。

4) 加上所有者的限定词，也可以表示是某人首先发起或创议的。

• At the initiative of Paul Ehrenfest, a special chair in Leiden was created for Albert Einstein.经保尔·埃伦费斯特创议，莱登大学为爱因斯坦设立了一个讲座。

5) 作为可数名词，表示一件件的带有崭新首创性质的行动方案。例如美国前总统里根的 Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) （战略防御方案，又称“星球大战计划”）也可以理解为不单是“方案”、“计划”，而且是“行动”本身。

• I don't think the government is likely to support such a private initiative.我觉得政府不见得会支持这样一件私人举办的事业。
• Moreover, the Bush administration simply dislikes spending money on many domestic initiatives, in contrast to its open-ended attitude toward military outlays and expeditions. (The Atlantic Monthly, Nov. 2005, p.38)况且，布什政府根本就不喜欢在许多国内事业上花钱，却反而对一些军事开支和远征采取有求必应的态度。
