2) 最原始的意义是“拯救”（瞬时动作的第四类动词）。
- She wanted to save her reputation.她想挽救自己的名誉。
- Rescue workers saved 20 people from the burning house.救援人员从燃烧着的房子里救出了二十个人。
- They saved him from drowning.他们救了他免遭灭顶之灾。
转义有比“拯救”轻一些的“佑护”（此时由瞬时动作转为延续活动，亦即转为第二类动词）。
- God save the Queen.上帝佑护女王（这里的 save 是虚拟语气，不能用直陈语气的 saves）。
另一个转义是“节省”（第四类或第一类动词）。
- It saves a lot of time.这能节省许多时间。
- You can save a lot of money buying a season ticket.买季节票，可以省很多钱。
- ... considerable doubts from experts about whether it (= the measure) would save elderly and disabled Americans much money. (The Washington Post, Jan. 13, 2007)…专家们所抱的巨大怀疑，不知道这个措施会不会给美国的老人和残障人士节省大笔的钱。
但是要注意：save 的直接宾语是指全部节省下来的总量，如果省下的只是总量中的一部分，这个总量就不可以作为直接宾语。比如说，原来保险费一百元，现在可以节省一部分，“节省保险费”就不能说 save the premium，因为这样说就是一百元全部省了下来，免费保险。应该将 save 改为不及物动词，再加个 on，说 save on the premium。
save 作“拯救”解或是作“节省”解的双关意义，在 John Fowles 的小说《法国中尉的女人》(The French Lieutenant's Woman)第六章的一段对话中可以看到：
- “... But she has been living principally on her savings from her previous situation.” "She has saved, then." "If you take her in, madam, I think she will be truly saved."“…但她主要靠从前的积蓄过日子。”“如此说来，她有积蓄？”“如果您收留她，太太，她就算真正得救了。”
save 的另一个转义是“免得”，后面的直接宾语是个名词或动名词。
- She recorded the lecture to save having to take notes.她把听的课录下音来，免得要做笔记。
- Drip-drying the shirts saves ironing them.让衬衣滴干，可以免烫。
- It will save you a journey.这就可以免得你去一趟。
save 通常带有正面的把好的东西“省下来”、“拯救”的意义，但是有时候也可以有负面的把不喜欢的事情“拖拉推延”的意义。
- Don't save everything for/to the last minute.别把一切事情都拖到最后一分钟才做。
3) 作“使某人免得”、“替某人节省”与“为某人保留”解时，可以有双宾语（第四类或第一类动词，搭配见 buy 条）。
- Please save me a seat. 请给我留个座位。或：Please save it/a seat for me. 或 Please save it/a seat for Bob. 或 Please save Bob a seat.
但不能说 *Please save Bob it 或 Please save it him 或 Please save him it.
4) save 的词源来自拉丁文的 salvāre，但是后来其中的 l 逐渐消失，只保留在宗教意义的名词 salvation（拯救）和特殊意义的名词或动词 salvage（抢救（遇灾物资）；打捞（沉船）；保护（名誉）等）。
- the Salvation Army（基督教慈善组织）救世军
- the salvage of the wreck沉船的打捞
- The paintings were salvaged from the fire.画作从火灾中抢救出来了。
- How can he salvage his career now?他现在怎能保住他的前程呢？
但是 salvage 的“抢救”，一般只用于物（灾难中的抢救或事后的搜索余物），通常不用于灾难中的救人（用 save 或 rescue）。
