■ wear

1) 作为及物动词,最基本的词义就是“穿着(衣物)”。是个表示延续状态的第一类动词,表示“衣服已经穿在身上”的状态(put on 则表示“从未穿到穿上”的有限瞬时动作)。表示比较经常的穿着状态,用一般时;表示一时的穿着状态,用进行时。中国人往往对这个动态与静态的区别不敏感,要特别注意。

2) wear 的直接宾语包括的范围比“衣服”要大得多,可以包括头发发式、胡须、佩带首饰、眼镜、助听器、耳机、临时脸上带上的小物件,等等。

  • He was often seen wearing flecks of his breakfast in a bushy beard that was turning gray.人们常常看见他吃过早餐后那变灰色的胡须上还带着食物残渣。

而且更加特别的是:还可以包括化妆和脸部表情。这不但中国人难以习惯,就连另一些欧洲语言的人也不容易适应。

  • She wore her hair shoulder length in a tangled mass of curls.她把头发留成一大把发卷,长及肩头。
  • He wears his long hair in a ponytail.他留长头发,梳成辫子。

  • She wore a huge smile.她满面笑容。

尤其值得注意的是:同一个 wear 后面,往往既出现较为自然的表现衣物、首饰之类的宾语,也同时出现不那么自然的表现其他东西或是脸部表情的宾语。

  • He wore wire-rimmed glasses and a beard.他带着金丝框眼镜,留着胡须。
  • The older man also wore a severe dark suit and severe facial expressions.那个年纪大些的人,也一样穿着颜色深重严峻的衣装,脸上一副严峻的表情。

wear 是“穿着”衣服的静态(第一类动词),与之对应的动态动词(第四类动词)是 put on。同样,与静态的 wear “呈现(某种表情)”相对的动态动词,也是 put on。

  • After a last meeting with Zhou, in which Nixon sought reassurance that the record of their private talks would remain secret, the Americans flew home wearing smiles that were almost certainly not just put on for the cameras.
