■ convince 与 persuade

1) convince 与 persuade 在意义上的区别原来比较明确。convince 是说服某人相信某一说法符合事实或某一主张是正确的；persuade 则是说服某人去采取某行动。所以在搭配上分别是 convince somebody that..., convince somebody of something...; persuade somebody to inf.。

• A father may convince his son that his room needs straightening but be unable to persuade him to do anything about it.一个做父亲的可以说服儿子承认他的房间需要整理一番，但又可能说不服儿子去动手干起来。

但是在现代英语中，这个释义上与搭配上的界限已经模糊，两者已经可以互用：convince somebody to inf. ; persuade somebody that..., persuade somebody of something 的搭配也已经普遍使用，be persuaded that 或 be persuaded of something 也可以代替 be convinced that 或 be convinced of something 表示“确信”的状态。

• Rumsfeld convinced Garner to stay temporarily. (Newsweek, Oct. 9, 2006, p.35)伦斯菲尔德说服了加尔纳暂时留下来。
• I learned a lesson from that, and decided that the best way to convince Kim Jong Il to change his mind on a nuclear weapons program is to have others send the same message. (George W. Bush, Oct. 11, 2006)我由此得到了一个教训，明确了，要说服金正日在核武器计划上改变主意，最好的办法，是由别人来向他发出同样的信息。
• ... and it will require a great deal more evidence than is ever likely to be available, thank God, to persuade me that Tiberius was as blameless a monarch as King George V. (Somerset Maugham, The Moon and Sixpence, Chapter I)…要想劝说我让我把罗马暴君提比留看作是同英王乔治五世同样的一位毫无瑕疵的君主，也需要远比手头掌握的多得多的证据，但是谢天谢地，这种证据看来很难找到。

2) convince 是个趋成动词（第三类），是表示经过一段过程后动作完成，达到了目的。如果只是在进行说服工作，对方还没有听从，就不能直接用，但是可以加以“过程化”，说 try to convince。

• Before you try to convince anyone else, be sure you are convinced, and if you cannot convince yourself, drop the subject.你在设法说服任何别人之前，先要弄清楚你自己已经是信服了的，如果你连自己也说不服，那你就打消这个话题吧（这里 try to convince 不能改为 convince，因为说的是开口去说服别人，还谈不上别人听不听，cannot convince 中的 convince 指的才是达到说服目的）。

又从前面 Rumsfeld convinced Garner to stay temporarily 一例，也可以看出 convince 是达到了说服的目的。至于 persuade，有人主张它只是表示“努力说服”的过程，不包括“说服了”的结果，但是也有人认为 persuade 同 convince 一样，也可以指经过过程之后达到终点的瞬时动作。
