词组 | earth |
释义 | earth The names of planets other than our own are invariably capitalized, but earth is more often than not lowercased. Capitalization is most likely when the earth is being referred to in astronomical terms: • ... the effects which the cosmos has on the planet Earth —David W. Hughes, Nature, 14 June 1969 When the other planets are also referred to, there is some tendency both to capitalize Earth and to omit the definite article the which normally precedes it: • ... for the moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Earth —Brian T. O'Leary et al., Science, 15 Aug. 1969 Some writers, however, choose to lowercase earth and to include the even when referring to the other planets: • The earth is uniquely favored among the planets • The large planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) have only a small solid core —Sir Edward Bullard, Scientific American, September 1969 Both treatments are perfectly acceptable. The sensible thing to do is to choose whichever styling seems most natural to you in a particular context, and to use that styling consistently in similar contexts. |
