词组 -odd
释义 -odd
When used to indicate a quantity somewhat greater than a given round number, odd is usually preceded by a hyphen.
... the past twenty-odd years —Alec Rackowe, The Writer, May 1953
The three thousand-odd people who attended —New Yorker, 19 Sept. 1953
... the 50-odd people she has interviewed —George P. Hunt, Life, 21 July 1967
... the two-hundred-odd commercial stations — Stanley Gortikov, quoted in Center Mag., September 1968
... the 600-odd Scouts returned home —Dick Pryce, Scouting, January-February 1972
      Unhyphenated examples do occur,
... the 50 odd most popular U.S. stocks — Wall Street Jour., 28 Oct. 1946
but they entail a greater risk of being misunderstood, and often with unintended humorous results.
... disciplinary regulations which ... must apply to the five hundred odd officers —James Gould Coz-zens, Guard of Honor, 1948
... forty-six of the eighty odd stories written by Poe -—British Book News, May 1955
... they sold four million odd records, more than the Beatles ever did in a year —Michael Thomas, Rolling Stone, 16 Mar. 1972
Our advice is to include the hyphen and so avoid possible ambiguity.
Copperud 1980 objects to some used before a number -I- odd as being redundant, but it seems idiomatic and not particularly bothersome to us, though it is clearly not required:
... an enclave of some thirty-odd buildings —Russell Lynes, Harper's, November 1968
... some 260-odd large and close-packed pages — John Crowe Ransom, N.Y. Rev. of Books, 23 Oct. 1970
In fact, we found fewer instances of such use in our files than we had expected. Here may be a clue to why this use with some seems so familiar: it occurs in both of our citations for -odd that are quotations from speech. In speech, where no hyphen is available to clearly distinguish this sense of odd from others, some takes on the job of the hyphen and acts as a sense marker to avoid misunderstanding. So in speech some + a number + odd is far from redundant. See also some 1.
