词组 | momento |
释义 | momento Momento is a rather rare spelling variant of memento. It is unetymological, since it obscures the word's relation to memory and remember, and probably shows the influence of moment. Some call it a misspelling, but it appears often enough in edited prose to have been considered acceptable for entry in at least two dictionaries: Webster's Third and the OED Supplement. • ... a nostalgic momento of an earlier century — Joseph Wechsberg, New Yorker, 28 Mar. 1953 • ... a satisfyingly real momento of my enjoyment — Margaret Forster, The Writer, October 1968 • ... lexical momentos of the pop culture —John Algeo, American Speech, Winter 1980 The spelling is attested as early as 1853 in a letter written by Chauncey A. Goodrich, professor at Yale, son-in-law of Noah Webster, and first editor in chief of Merriam-Webster dictionaries. The OED Supplement instances George Eliot from 1871 and Dylan Thomas from 1951. |
