词组 moneys, monies
释义 moneys, monies
In most of its uses, money has no plural, but when the reference is to discrete sums of money, usually obtained from various sources or distributed to various individuals or groups, the plural moneys or monies is often used:
... the greater part of the moneys will have to come from the Federal Government —Lester Markel, N.Y. Times, 5 June 1967
... the basis for distributing many federal grant monies —Sandra Laufter, Change, September 1971
... to raise the monies it will need from the large municipal corporations —Ian Breach, The Sunday Times (London), 20 Jan. 1974
... the present allocation of tax moneys and resources —Marcus Raskin, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 11 Apr. 1976
... union pension-fund moneys are being used to destroy union jobs —Jeremy Rifkin & Randy Barber, Saturday Rev., 2 Sept. 1978
... ad hoc collections of public and private monies —Fred Ferretti, N.Y. Times, 13 July 1980
The plural monies has occasionally been criticized because it suggests a singular mony rather than money. It is, however, an old and perfectly respectable variant that is used about as commonly as moneys, and it is recognized as standard in all current dictionaries.
